At the IADC World Drilling Conference in Estoril, Shelf Drilling presented a joint paper co-authored with ID3 and Kwantis, showcasing a Generative AI-powered solution for automating Daily Drilling Report (DDR) creation and reducing reporting effort while improving data quality and operational efficiency.
AI-Driven Automation of Daily Drilling Reports
The solution combines AI-driven activity recognition with Generative AI to automatically classify rig operations, generate detailed activity breakdowns, and populate IADC-compliant time logs. Dynamic operations such as drilling, tripping, circulation, reaming, and backreaming are identified and documented automatically, while flat time activities are detected and coded based on brief crew inputs interpreted by the AI engine.
Field Deployment Delivers Significant Time Savings
The technology was deployed as a web-based application across four offshore rigs and evaluated using more than 150 rig-days of operational data. Results demonstrated a reduction in report preparation time of more than 50%, substantially decreasing the manual workload associated with daily reporting.
Improved Data Quality and Operational Focus
Beyond time savings, the solution consistently delivered more accurate drilling parameters, enhanced documentation of flat time activities, and higher-quality KPIs. By automating routine reporting tasks, drilling teams can dedicate more attention to the safe and efficient execution of operations, supporting the industry’s ongoing digital transformation and adoption of AI-enabled workflows.
