kwantis and students from the Polytechnic University of Milan carried out joint research on the benefits of a Design for Decommissioning approach for power plant projects.

The challenge

Decommissioning is becoming increasingly important in developed countries, where many facilities must be dismantled in the coming years. The research set out to assess what a power plant project gains by applying a Design for Decommissioning approach.

Our approach

The research group:

  • carried out in-depth data mining on decommissioning
  • met Italian electricity operators and contractors
  • built a probabilistic model to assess the benefits of Design for Decommissioning

The outcome

The analysis demonstrated that considering decommissioning activities early allows a significant cost reduction at the end of the asset lifecycle.

The thesis drew the interest of the IPMA (International Project Management Association), which published a detailed article on it in its Italian journal.
