Existing well complexity indexes mostly look at drilling alone. kwantis built a Well Complexity Index (WCI) tailored to Eni's needs, which also weighs environmental and logistical factors and applies to every type of well.

The challenge

Most existing Well Complexity Indexes (WCIs) consider only drilling operations, and few include some completion activities. Eni needed an index tailored to its own needs.

Our approach

kwantis first benchmarked existing WCIs from the literature and from oil companies. Experts from all technical areas then refined and ranked the selected factors and provided the evaluation criteria, so the index reflects the perspective of the people who work on the projects.

The resulting index:

  • includes technical issues as well as environmental and logistical factors;
  • applies to all types of wells, for drilling and completion activities;
  • covers the whole Exploration & Production process, from planning to production optimization activities;
  • analyzes both qualitative and quantitative elements.

The outcome

The index has many possible applications. In risk management, wells already drilled can be clustered by their index value to define specific KPIs for each group, giving an accurate set of references for planning future wells.

The same references help identify potential areas of improvement, with the related equipment selection and contractual strategies based on incentives or penalties.
