On Cairo Metro Line 3, kwantis identified and evaluated the threats and opportunities affecting schedule, cost and quality, with particular attention to the tunnelling carried out with a slurry tunnel boring machine (TBM).
The challenge
Tunnelling with a slurry TBM was the most demanding part of Cairo Metro Line 3. The partners needed to identify and evaluate the threats and opportunities that could affect the project’s schedule, cost and quality.
Our approach
kwantis carried out the risk analysis together with the international project team, both in the project offices and on the construction site, with three objectives:
- Identify, evaluate and mitigate every project risk, threats and opportunities alike, through interviews with the risk owners.
- Build risk management awareness during those interviews.
- Set up risk escalation and reporting for the project.
The outcome
The analysis identified every threat and opportunity, HSE included, and ranked the most significant ones so that risk owners could set their priorities. Where needed, mitigation and fallback actions were defined to bring each risk down to ALARP (as low as reasonably practicable).
Project management and the partners came away with a shared understanding of the project’s uncertainties, and a way to keep monitoring them.
